What/Why:
I saw a ticker on CNN last night that said it's 484 days until Election Day 2008 (561 days until Inauguration Day 2009). After another weird week in politics I think it's justifiable to start the countdown to the end of this administration.

**"Cheney's office, with backing from the White House, argues that the offices of the president and vice president are exempt from the order because they are not executive branch "agencies."

**"On Tuesday, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff told the editorial board of The Chicago Tribune that he had a "gut feeling'' about a new period of increased risk...."Summertime seems to be appealing to them,'' Chertoff said in his discussion with the newspaper about terrorists.

**"I respect the jury's verdict," Bush said in a statement. "But I have concluded that the prison sentence given to Mr. Libby is excessive. Therefore, I am commuting the portion of Mr. Libby's sentence that required him to spend thirty months in prison."

**We've been at war for 5 years and 4 months and it's said that a progress report on Iraq is set to be released this week concluding that "that the U.S.-backed government in Baghdad has not met any of its targets for political, economic and other reform, speeding up the Bush administration's reckoning on what to do next, a U.S. official said Monday."

I think this is just was just a fluke. I don't recall there being any drama. I'm pretty sure everyone was in consensus about how much they're ready to have some new leaders. Maybe it was censorship that came down as a result of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and Bush himself. (Just kidding, Yelp.)

I woke up this morning and I think I remember this.  I have no idea why it was planted in my brain this morning.  At any rate, I remember someone (prolly DM) telling a story they heard about Obama that related to taxes, like he told a child, "If you have a whole pizza and your friend has none, shouldn't you give your friend a slice of your pizza."  It was supposed to be an example of why he's such a bad man, but that was the first thing I heard about him that made me want to vote for him.  I didn't respond, but I know it was on yelp and I can't find it in Talk, but I think that's maybe what the discussion up there was.

Only 251 days till this doofus is gone.

"President Bush said yesterday that he gave up golfing in 2003 "in solidarity" with the families of soldiers who were dying in Iraq, concluding that it was "just not worth it anymore" to play the sport in a time of war.

"I don't want some mom whose son may have recently died to see the commander in chief playing golf," Bush said in a White House interview with the Politico. "I feel I owe it to the families to be as -- to be in solidarity as best as I can with them. And I think playing golf during a war just sends the wrong signal."

Bush said he decided to stop playing golf on Aug. 19, 2003, when a truck bomb in Baghdad killed U.N. special representative Sergio Vieira de Mello and more than a dozen others.

He said he received word of the attack while playing golf during a stay at the family ranch near Crawford, Tex. Press reports at the time indicate he took the call from Condoleezza Rice, then his national security adviser.

"They pulled me off the golf course, and I said it's just not worth it anymore to do," Bush said in yesterday's interview.

I just saw this . . . the Office of the President and the Office of the Vice President AREN'T executive agencies.  The wack thing was that Cheney argued that the Office of the Vice President wasn't part of the Executive BRANCH.  Big difference.

funny, Lisa!  Keith Olberman tallied up the # of days the president went on vacation (Crawford, etc) during his 8-year term.

The total came to somewhere in excess of 2 years.  Two YEARS of vacation amid one of the most turmoil-ridden presidential eras of our time.

Of course, half of me is ok with that.  Had he been around more, we'd likely be in deeper shi+.
