The vibe in this place is definitely a college vibe but, it is oh so fun! The Mexican Martinis are the very best. None others like it in the world :) The food is good too. Every time I go to Austin I have to hit this spot. The deck is everyone's favorite dining area so, if you want to sit out there then get there early or be prepared for a long wait.
Yeah, I get it. There may be better Tex-Mex in Austin. Screw it; I'm not ashamed to admit I love this place way more than I should. First off, it was walking distance from North Campus. That's a plus one right there. It's got great Mexican Martinis. Anyone who tells you otherwise is kidding themselves. Or they're getting the house. Do yourself a favor; spend the extra dollar and upgrade to at least the Cazadores. I also bit the bullet and did a Patron one once. I'm not sure it's worth the extra cash, but man is that thing smooth.
As for the food, I'm a fan of two things: the Migas Enchiladas (covered with chili con carne sauce) or the Stuffed Avocado (covered with suiza sauce). The sauce choice is especially important; pair a dish up with the wrong sauce, and you get the wrong taste. The one major disappointment is the salsa, which is spicy without having a good taste.
Yeah, the service tends to suck here, but it's almost all disinterested college students, so what are you expecting? My suggestion is to come late night and eat at the bar, preferably on Top Shelf Tuesdays (where premium Mexican Martinis are cheaper).

Don't do it.
I try really hard to be open-minded about people's food preferences. But I just can't understand why people like Trudy's so much.
I mean, if my only criteria were that I wanted a place where I could drink, maybe sit on a patio, and fill up on chips and salsa, OK. Although there are still many other places where I would much rather do this - better atmosphere, better chips, better salsa, better drinks, better...well, everything.
And really? The food is just bad. And totally overpriced. Perhaps this is partly due to my aversion to Tex Mex, but my meals here always seem mushy and carelessly thrown together in a big sloppy mess, as if the chef is hung over and making food for his roommate (whom he happens to hate).
Am I being too harsh? Probably.
Have I mentioned yet that I don't think you should go?
Yeah. Don't.

verpriced and overrated. I only go here when forced. There are so many other places in town with much, much better Mexican (El Chile, Vivo Vivo, El Gallo) that feel less like a Chilli's or TGI Fridays. And the waitstaff always seem to have a sourpuss on. Finally, they don't take reservations. At all. This locations gets an extra star for having more character than the other two locations though.

5 stars for the Mexican Martinis. Just too much fun. Served up with the WHOLE shaker for $7-9 depending on the tequila? DONE! This New Yorker hasn't seen prices like that since...well...never. Clearly I had two of them...

This place smells funny. I really think they should reconsider the carpet situation, especially downstairs. HOWEVER, I like the food here. The first two times I had the stuffed avocado ($11). It's probably the most unhealthy thing I've ever consumed. Take an already fatty thing, insert cheese and chicken, cover in batter, deep fry, smother in more cheese--you can't go wrong!!! Seriously, it was delicious.
Somehow, I avoided arterial atherosclerosis and lived to try the restaurant again. When I returned for breakfast, I looked for another item covered in cheese and decided on migas enchiladas ($8). Usually my standard restaurant breakfast is regular migas, but migas in corn tortillas covered in my choice of sauce, served with rice and beans, sounded really good. It was. The queso was kind of overkill though because there was cheese inside, too.
While dining at Trudy's, I observed that they had some good daily drink specials, so I made a few trips back to try some beverages. The Mexican Martini ($7?) was about like the one at Chuy's, and the sangria and strawberry margaritas ($4.25 on special Fri.-Sat.) were comparable, too (maybe a little stronger even). Trudy's is less busy and has faster service; however, I like the chips and salsa better at Chuy's. Trudy's salsa is so hot that it makes my stomach hurt, and the chips are kind of thick and slightly chewy.
Despite a few small complaints, I'll definitely keep eating at Trudy's.

I've put off reviewing Trudy's for so long, I can no longer do it. I've been to Trudy's a number of times and had an OK experience. But a little bit "blah."
Service:
Slow, blase, and occasionally downright inattentive.
Drinks:
Better. I had a good time here at happy hour. I once, however, ordered a Shiner upstairs, and it came out room temp. A warm beer is a cardinal sin in the Gospel according to Jonathan. That warm beer will cool you little in hell, Trudy's.
Food:
Meh. I was strangely inspired after my first glance through the menu. And as it turns out, I found the menu better on paper than it was on those super hot plates they make a big deal about. I can't remember everything I've had there, but I do recall having some sort of enchiladas and the stuffed chicken avocado. The enchiladas I've long since forgotten, and the stuffed chicken avocado was a dirty greasebomb from planet Moldy Guacamole. (That didn't even make sense...)
I know what some of you are thinking... (Hey, buddy - I LOVE the stuffed chicken avocado! You must be some kind of creep or something...) Well, hate me today, but when there's a run on these things, and you get the last one - you'll be thanking me for not eating it.
I'll stop here, and leave room for an update, since this accurately reflects my experience at Trudy's till most recently.

First of all, I don't know why all my friends just LOVES Trudy's... Personally it's just regular Tex-Mex to me, it's nothing to die over... plus the place is about as crowded as 21st century hell most of the time. Of the three or four instances where I was persuaded to go there, the routine was always like this: Get there, wait for table, discussing alternative locations while waiting, deciding to wait instead, and me bitching at the person for picking this place. The service, once you get inside is alright. The wait staff is fairly fast and courteous, which is the only thing keeping this place from sinking to 1-star in my humble opinion. Then again, the close proximity to UT will ensure this place will be a money sink for years to come regardless of ratings. Thanks guys.
Now my first response to the age old "so... where are we going to eat?" is... "Not Trudy's."
I'm not kidding about that last part. You can ask my friends.

I HATE BEING SUBJECTED TO TRUDY'S.
It's the go-to for certain friends for their birthdays. Or, like Guero's, one of those Austin places that someone told your visiting friends they just HAD to try. Really? The food is barely passable, and mostly tasty only because it's greasy. As for the drinks, I really am not wowed by the Mexican martinis, nor am I impressed by their strength merely because the place decides to limit how many each patron can consume. Finally, 4/5 times when I try to order something relatively simple and clean--a Stoli and soda--I end up with a Stoli and Sprite.
Basically, if you've managed to get me to go to Trudy's with you, you can be confident in the strength of our friendship (or the gravity of some debt I owe you).

I went here with the bf and we got seating pretty fast though we had dinner at 5 pm on a Friday. We got seated next to a huge table of college kids which was quite annoying considering the fact that they were drunk and loud.
The food was great and reasonably priced. I love the chips and salsa that they provide. Soooo good. I got the chicken enchiladas. The staff were pretty nice and for 2 people, the tab was about 25 bucks. Not too shabby.
There's parking across the street but you're only allowed after a certain hour. It's best to go early if you're planning to get dinner here. It's pretty loud and seating is pretty close to each other.

Trudy's. Were I deserving of your love, I would write this review in verse.
Trudy's. Where I told a political candidate in our group who was in a runoff that I hadn't voted for him the first time and I was looking forward to not voting for him again.
Trudy's. Where I watched a sloshed six foot one Brazilian lesbian with three lip piercings teach a friend some filthy Portuguese before boarding a flight back to LA.
Trudy's. In college, I had convinced my parents you were a gas station so my bank statement wouldn't betray my illicit love for your Mexican Martinis. 1800. Grand Marnier. Salt half the glass ... but you know how I like it, Trudy's. You always know.
Trudy's. Where I ran into the cop who had given me a speeding ticket four days before.
Trudy's. Where I got a cop to tear up my speeding ticket after buying him four shots of Jager.
Trudy's. Where, in your parking lot, a cop who had just committed to dismissing a speeding ticket for me, administered a field sobriety test and decided I was good to go. (I either have fantastic tolerance or the key to field sobriety tests is to make sure the cop is drunker than you are.)
Trudy's. Where I might have my Last Supper in Austin, if I can get all my crap packed up and loaded.
Trudy's. We'll always have Paris.

When I lived in Austin during the mid-late 90's, Trudy's Texas Star was one of my favorite hang-outs. Nothing was better than enjoying a Mexican Martini with a side of extra olives and a bowl of chips and salsa with their awesome salsa. I recently went back to Austin for a visit and I'm glad to see that the place is still as popular as ever. When I try and explain to folks here on the East coast how tasty and refreshing a Mexican Martini is, they usually give me a blank stare and reply, "that drink sounds too sweet and bland.' That's okay. Austinities will keep this drink along with Shiner Bock their local secret.

You know... I feel like Trudy's has gone downhill a little bit lately. I used to love going there to get a mexican martini and some enchiladas but I feel like the last couple of times I've been it hasn't been as good as I remember. The biggest problem is that I can't figure out if they have actually gotten worse or if I am just remembering things with a skewed perspective.
Either way, it is still totally worth going out there for dinner. The food and drinks are still solid even if they aren't the decadence that I remember.

I am officially addicted to Trudy's queso especial. My husband and I make it to Top Shelf Tuesday, nearly every week, and we are never disappointed. Now, I really don't eat the food. My meal of choice is queso and margaritas. In my opinion, their Mexican food is not great, but the vegetable plate is, just don't get a salad, they're gross. The broccoli with queso is yummy, with grilled zucchini, rice and beans. The veggie flaquities are also scrumptious.
I have to say we have always had the most wonderful service there, I am always pleased with every waitperson we've had, and we've had a lot. They all go above and beyond, even the host or hostess. One time they were really busy when we sat on the patio and no one talked to us, which stunk, but I figure everyone has their day. We only go to the central location, which is in a converted house with great art. There's also a great patio surrounded by trees and fans in the summer, heaters in the winter.

1st stop on our Austin Vacation from California. My husband ordered us two Mexican Martini's. He always talks about them (he's from Texas) and now I know why. They're like a really good margarita but without the overpowering sweetness. They use a little olive juice. You get a whole shaker to yourself and a martini glass with a couple of skewered olives. The queso here was also pretty good. Definitely a cool spot to sit on the screened porch with a bunch of friends and relax.

Got there and there was a line that would make anyone reconsider. But we stuck to it and managed to get a great table. Their Taco's were really good, enchilada..not so. But I've never had one that has made me stop in place. A friend of ours ordered some fried avocado thing and it was pretty awesome. Gotta remember to ask him what it was. Service was pretty good. They kept up on us really well. There was totally a college centered crowd there too but that's alright, man i had a good time.
The only reason I am giving Trudy's 2 stars is for the migas and drinks. This is one of the most overrated places in Austin! I've tried to like them, I've tried to mix up the food and get something different every single time. Every single time, I'm highly disappointed. Every dish I've ever ordered lacked something and really, it's just an overrated tourist trap.
I have tried and tried to like Trudy's, but I can't.
True, it has a few things going for it. Good queso, endless amounts of chips, the Mexican Martini (complete with shaker and classy martini glass), and food that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. And yet...
Service is so-so. I had one server who was really good and dealt with our huge party with ease. I had another server who was so morose and unfriendly that it put ME into a bad mood. All other times I've had a medley of other servers who were acceptable (polite, friendly, and direct. They did their jobs but didn't make an impression).
The food is okay. I'm not a fan of Tex-Mex, but the migas are good. I've been unimpressed with the quesadillas but surprised by the tastiness of their burgers. So it's hit-or-miss.
What I can't stand -- and what makes me dislike Trudy's -- is the atmosphere. It's always crowded. The downstairs seating area is way too loud. Everyone shouts over the noise of the speakers, and everyone shouts over everyone else, and you end up with a horrible din of people screaming. It's a restaurant, NOT a nightclub, so turn that shit down. When I asked our server (the really good one that otherwise impressed me) if there was any way to turn the music down, he said he'd ask, but it was probably not going to happen. What is the point of keeping the music that loud? I left with a headache.
I remember the upstairs not being any better. They squeeze too many people into too small a space (I once watched a server do strange contortions to try to get around a chair and a structural pole and felt very sorry for him) and the decibel level is just ridiculous.
The only place I like is the downstairs patio area. You don't have to wait for a host to seat you if you see an open spot.
Despite the fact that my boyfriend took me to a Trudy's (though not this one; it was the one down south) on our first official date, and that one of my friends works at this Trudy's location, I still cannot like Trudy's and I will only go if dragged.

This Trudy's location is almost always busy but that never stops anyone from going. Its all about people from campus and the surrounding areas converging on drinks, apps, and some of the best bar style tex mex in the area. Overall the Mexican martinis are usually the best thing to order, and they will definitely cut you off after you've reached the limit of two. Don't try any funny business or they'll kick your butt to the curve. Tipping the bartenders always goes a long way if you're sitting at the bar and even on a busy night you can be guaranteed good service and a lively environment.

It's like a dirty version of peanut butter and jelly with a banana on the side!
This will be the first place I hit up once Lent is over.
Why, oh, why do you have to limit me to just two shakers of Martinis??? I swear I can handle it!
The servers I've had there have been awesome and held my hand (almost literally) as they helped me develop my martini to perfection.
And, for Sunday brunch. What a way to start the day! Migas so plentiful, I had to take them to go and munch on them throughout the day! Anyone who can keep my cup full (coffee, water, alcohol) is a-okay in my book!

There's a lot to Trudy's and if you cant get past the bad, you'll never appreciate what you 'should' be going there for in the first place. I'll start with the bad.
The service sucks, its a bunch of Austin hippies who don't care if you eat or not just as long as you dont make their job more difficult.
The seating arrangements are terrible, you'll find yourself easily cramped and god forbid you need to go to the bathroom or the bar, you will have to shuck and jive your way to your destination.
The food is not too bad, I would say its a slightly upscale Tex Mex restaurant.
Now the good - Trudy's Mexican Martinis (2 drink limit, with good reason). They serve you the chilled martini with the full shaker included. If I'm not mistaken, they're about $6 each, $8 for the top shelf which includes Patron instead of Jose Cuervo. If you want to be sneaky you can order your two (the waiters are under strict instruction to stop serving them after 2) and then have a friend order another for you. This results in a lot of bad shit happening to you for the rest of the night but if you just got laid off or dumped/cheated on and you need to drink away the pain, it's a good idea.

Trudy's to me is like an old friend. Trudy's is just plain reliable. I know that I can always get a good meal and good drinks here. I have eaten here literally hundreds of times, and I have never had a bad meal. Not once.
Some people complain that it is cramped and noisy, and it is, so if that's not your thing, now you know. And the service is your typical Austin wait-service, which I greatly prefer to the "Hi, my name is Craig, and I'll be your server this evening. Can I start you off with some fresh-squeezed raspberry lemonade blast(tm) and an order of our mega-awesome fajita shooters(tm)" crap you get at corporate chains.
But other folks have observed that Trudy's is the kind of place that you visit twice in one weekend in Austin after moving away, and they couldn't be more right. People out here in Silicon Valley rave about their Mexican food, but I just don't see it; the Mexican food out here is for the most part just awful. Would it kill them to learn how to make migas?

OMG ... can I just say how much I love the Migas ... they are so damn good. I love Austin, if for nothing else, their Migas. This being said, Trudy makes them especially good and I am still having dreams about them! My friends got the fried avocado that looked really good but they said it didn't live up to the reputation ... so I guess not everything on the Menu is good.
Moreover, what put a real dent in my experience was that we waited like 1.5 hrs to get our order and to boot -- our waitress got it wrong! For some reason, our waitress kept having a nervous breakdowns when we asked her for the check or told her she overcharged us for a meal we never ordered. We had the manager unexpectedly go to our table 2-3 times [she sending him over] ... we were really confused since it was such a minor issue to resolve.
Anyhow, I'm sure under better circumstances and another waitress, we may have had a more pleasant time ... but for their weak service [-1 star], frazzled waitress [-1 star] and mediore avocado [-.5 star] = 2.5 stars

Wow, there are some people who are fussy at Trudy's. I've just never been able to work up that kind of an opinion of this place one way or another.
That said, it's pretty much a WYSIWYG joint, with your boilerplate pseudo-Tex Mex and Texas foodstuffs happening, your nachos, your tortilla soup, your chicken-fried what-have-you. This is not the place to seek out a particularly unique dining experience. And yet, the crowd seems to endure, probably partially because they're local and unchanged over time, and partially because in Austin we love sitting outside, and the joint has a homey deck framing the bar in the back.
So really, this may be more of a two and half deal, but I'm erring upside today given that I've had some nice times there. Nice, but unremarkable, like a good arm rest. You try holding your arms up all the time, it's hard.

The food is OK. If you're looking for great tex-mex, don't come. The reason I come here is the Mexmarts. A killer concoction that only enhances the appeal when they tell you that two is the limit!
Bring a sober driver and get them to order mexmarts for you. After two you are done for a while. Two more and you'll be floored. At least one sober driver between two people is recommended. Anything less than 3 mexmarts and you're not going to be volatile enough.

Somebody get that waitress in the downstairs bar some anti-anxiety meds. stat.
New Years morning brunch was supposed to be relaxed and chill at Trudy's, a spot highly recommended by a friend. But geeeeeez...I was getting so stressed out by our waitress! She looked totally frazzled the whole time, had no idea what was on the menu or what sauces came with the dishes. Plus, she messed up our order and it took wayyyyyyy too long to fix the problem.
Basically, brunch took over two hours for our small party of 3, we never got our second dish fixed, and they took 15 minutes to bring our bill out (after we physically had to get up and remind them), and the bill was even incorrect when we received it.
I totally get it was New Years day and the place was crowded. And I understand that the downstairs bar may not get the same attention as the upstairs dining room. They even sent over 2 managers to apologize to us, which was a nice unexpected gesture. I did enjoy the food (hence the 2 stars for the stuffed avocado), but my main message is: have more competent wait staff available in the future. please.

Battle of the Great Combinations
Tag Team No. 1: Batman & Robin
Strengths: Drop kicks, killer intuition, neat car, sizable fortune
Weaknesses: Wardrobe manager still thinks black is the new black, unfortunate bat/circus obsessions
Partnership Chemistry: Semi-militant heirarchical scheme resulting in not infrequent acts of defiance (e.g., that one where Batman says "stay here, Robin" but Robin (sigh) doesn't. Calamity ensues)
Tag Team No. 2: Stockton & Malone
Strengths: Pick & Roll; Making purple look ok on both a big black guy and a tiny white guy; Dream Team
Weaknesses: Playing during the era of Jordan and Olajuwon
Partnership Chemistry: Overheard after a game: "Hey Karl, do you ever feel like our relationship is superficial? Like it's always just a physical thing and that we never really get to share how it feels on the inside? Maybe this is an opportunity to grow?" "Shut up John."
Tag Team No. 3: Big Dipper & Little Dipper
Strengths: Scooping stars; Balls of fiery gas bedazzlement
Weaknesses: Quantum fluctuations in the microscopic inflationary region; The fact that ladies dig Orion's belt more than a pair of measuring cups
Partnership Chemistry: Generally stable; subject to nasty bouts of Einstein-Rosen bridges
Tag Team No. 4: Trudy's Migas & Fjitas
Strengths: The basic premise of migas AND fajitas in one dish; Grilled onions; Migas texture; great pico
Weaknesses: Vegetables in migas could be crisper; Chicken could be a little moister; extra charge for the guac just isn't worth the quantity, or quality.
Partnership Chemistry: This pair of foods deserves more action than Maverick and Goose working the Righteous Brothers. Without question, this dish is the most satisfying threesome you'll ever have for under $10.
Though Batman and Robin have that super computer, you'd be surpised how insightful the grilled onions can be. The migas have been defending the pick and roll since they were born - they'll make Stockon rely on long j's, which everyone knows he can't hit when the game is on the line. The Dippers are great, but totally nocturnal - migas and fajitas are ready to go whenever Trudy's is. Game. Set. Match.

Trudy's is alright. I've only had the stuffed avocados here because why wouldn't I have the stuffed avocados, they're great and they're avocados stuffed with chicken and stuff. I get them with the suiza sauce or whatever the white sauce is called. I'm not crazy about the rice and the black beans are too sweet for my taste. All I want is a stuffed avocado thanks. Maybe when I'm 21 I'll try out the drinks but for now, three stars is all Trudy's gets from me.
Man...how I wish Trudy's would move to San Francisco. I mean they would make so much money off of Texas transplants like myself. We don't have queso out here, I repeat no queso.
This place was my favorite restaurant back in school. Throw a couple of Mexican Martini's into me with a stuffed avocado and call it a night. There are times when I just want to fly the 5 hours to Austin to get that meal right there.

Not too shabby - Trudy's is definitely worth another look. I've been there before and the food was not good and not bad, just not memorable.
First things first, I had the house margarita (frozen) and it was excellent - did not taste like the standard lots-of-sugar-to-cover-up-the-lack-of-flavor mix margarita. I'm no connoisseur, but it seems to be made with good stuff (for a house margarita). I'd say that it was on the same level as Baby Acapulco's.
For my meal, I had the Fajitas and Migas - which weren't too bad. The eggs were a little bit underdone for my taste - almost a creamy texture, but still tasty. The fajitas were not very impressive, just standard fajitas, but they were covered up by a huge pile of onion pieces and one or two slices of green pepper.
Overall, I would be more than happy to go back to Trudy's and keep trying stuff from their menu.
