This place has always given me the creeps.  Especially if Marc Kartz is prowling around with his gleaming dome, conveniently accompanied by a totally boobular blond (I could never figure out if it was his wife, or if each time it was a different chick).  The food was less than impressive.  I will admit I had a club sandwich at around 3 in the morning (yes, I was wasted), but this means it should have been one of the best things (foodwise) I'd ever put into my mouth.  It wasn't.  Dry meat, soggy lettuce, but hey, the free pickles are always good.  Plus, I don't like the atmosphere of this place.  Yuppie central.  But duh, what part of 6th street isn't?

Favorite Katz's memory - Hangin with the late Clifford Antone @ 3:30 am. Katz's has been on my late night road map since I was in high school. One of the only places in Austin that you will wait in line at 2am. With that said heres the acceptable fare:

Katz's Klub (ask for soft cooked beef bacon)
Free pickles
Eggs (broadway/linda/laura) - poached eggs over turkey ham with potato pancakes and creamy horseradish sauce ala prime rib. This item isn't on the menu any longer so you have to ask for it
Blintzes

I've basically stuck to the same grub since I started going there years ago. Its a bit overpriced as the egg dish mentioned above is $10. It was still worth the price for the 3am BS sessions with Mr. Antone. Katz's may not be the best but I wouldn't trade the memories and the experience for nothin..

If any or all of the following apply:

1.  You're Jewish;
2.  You've ever lived in N.Y. (or even the N.Y.-South Florida Annex);
3.  You have functioning taste buds;
4.  You have a digestive system you'd like to keep in working order

Do not go to Katz's.  Ever.  It will offend you personally, morally, religiously, gastrically, basically in any way that you can stick an -ly on.  This place is a farce of a "deli," even judged by the laxest, "oh, well, what do you expect, it isn't N.Y" standard.  The food tastes disgusting, and it's pretty seedy inside (and nice and dark so it's difficult to determine how clean it actually is).

Bagels could be made of rubber galvanized with cat poop, and the cheese they put on the sandwiches is just the unadulterated cat poop (probably the only unadulterated thing in there).  I don't know how people choke this stuff down sober--I can't even stand the sight of the place when drunk.  Go to either Magnolia location or a Kerbey Lane instead, if you have the capacity to get there.

If you're drunk and you need some grub - you don't wanna go home to mom do ya? You wanna go to Katz's!

You can't go wrong with a 24-hour place.

Their buffalo chicken salad is pretty good.

Breaking Katz's down is pretty simple

1) They are open 24x7, which is rare in Austin
2) Free WiFi
3) Good Reuben's, especially on Friday's when they're on special (free fries)
4) Their prices are definitely high for what you get.  It's almost $20 for a soda, sandwich, and fries after tax & tip.  Definitely over priced.

The food: tastes funny, extremely small portion for the price, extremely pricey. Huge dissappointment.

Go to Kerby Lane Cafe instead, ummmm yummy.

When I find myself liking Katz's is when I'm there in the morning after a long night out and eating bagels and lox.

When I find myself disliking Katz's its usually late at night when some friends have convinced me that its the only thing open when I know I'd be better off eating at Taco Cabana or Starseeds.

The funny thing about Katz's is that there is always something going on inside.  There is tons of people watching potential and Mark Katz himself is quite a character.  I can't tell you that you shouldn't eat there, but if you are looking for real bacon in the morning look elsewhere.  If you are looking for a good bloody mary or dessert, then pull up a seat.

I went to Katz's sober.  At a time of the evening when there were many other options open to me.  But, I reasoned, there was a parking space nearby and I'd been wanting to try their Reuben.

Things started out well:  The queso and bagel chip appetizer was surprisingly delicious.  Aesthetically, this mild yellow gloop didn't look like a winner.  It is a gelatinous, Velveeta-like dip, but there is a secret to this ooze.  And the bagel chips were a nice change from the usual tortilla chips, which I don't think would have the strength to make a pass through the plastic goo.

Also delicious was my Texas Martini.  I'm a middleweight drinker, and with half of my shaker remaining, I was already having to fight to be conscious of what my face and arms were doing.  Thumbs up, Mr. Katz.

Unfortunately, the corned beef Reuben was just ok.  The meat was super chewy and stringy, making what was already a difficult bite even less graceful.  On the other hand, whipping my 1,000 Island dressing soaked head from side-to-side to tear the flesh away, I felt primal and quite virile.

I'm sure I'll give Katz's another go, but I'll get my Reuben fix elsewhere.

Many, many thanks to Alison P and Kevin N for hoofin' it all over downtown Austin with me in search for ANYWHERE that would serve food post 1am on a Friday night...

As I was STARVING, the food tasted pretty good...but I agree with AP, a bit overpriced for the quality. I am always shocked by NY deli prices, but I think if you are an NY deli in Austin, TX...prices should adjust accordingly.

I did a "build my own omlette," which proved very difficult in my mildly sober (I guess conversely that means mildly drunk as well) state of mind. I ended up with a Denver...good thing they sprinkle the selected ingredients on the top...a nice reminder of what I had actually ordered.

Ok, the other bonus of this place: PRIME people watching late night. I saw more people stumblin' down the street than I have in awhile, and it was fun. My comment, "Hey, this is Austin's Wrigleyville!" They kind of looked at me blankly, but its pretty true :)

Food, Ok. Service, Ok. Yes, I was full...so 3 stars. Oh, and it would help if they closed the windows when it drops below 50 or so late at night, I was freezin'!

It's amazing how something that seems so small, can have a huge impact on one's life. Before I moved to Austin, the only thing I knew of being fried was fried chicken. Then my brother took me here when I was visiting and mentioned "fried pickles". So we stopped into Katz's and ordered a set of fried pickles. The whole idea and concept just seemed so foreign and alien natured to me. SO putting all fear aside, I took the plunge and felt like Rodney Dangerfield jumping off the highdive in Back To School. And honestly, those fried pickles have been the only thing I've eaten at Katz's, but I felt deprived when i had to go back home where fried pickles don't exist.  So thank you Katz's for opening my world to fried pickles and other fried treats.

The fact that this 'NY Deli and Bar' is open 24 hours is what moves the rating up from a 2 star to a 3 star. I would much rather go here late at night for food, rather than Taco Cabana or something.

The prices are definitely New York style, about $10 for a grilled cheese and a side of fries. The grilled cheese was good, but the fries were not. It didn't seem like they were cooked enough and came out a bit soggy. But I was a pig enough to eat them anyway!

The waitress was a bit slow on top of that, but at 1:30 a.m., I really wasn't expecting 5 star service.

I have friends that live all over the state that absolutely have to come to Katz's when visiting Austin. If it's late at night and you want a decent sit-down meal, it's one of the better choices, but other than that, i would prefer to go somewhere else.

Oh, lordy.  They should consider changing the name, because I was SO excited that this was in Austin, I almost peed my pants in anticipation.  Having been to Katz's in NYC a number of times (keep your ticket!!) I was dying for a pastrami on rye with chopped liver and onions (yeah, sounds gross but is f-ing amazing!) and an egg cream, and I could not have been more wrong in my assumption.  What I ended up with was the world's smallest rye bread with a giant lump of meat in the center, and nothing at the edges.  And more expensive than that old NYC landmark.  It's a crime.  A serious crime for a gastronome like me.  The only time I will even consider going back is at 3 or 4 in the morning.  Wasted.  And rich.

Katz's gets all of these 3 stars from me because of the cheesecake shake. I've been there 4 or 5 times and can't remember anything else I had to eat there. I'm sure it was fine and overpriced, whatever the "real food" part of my meal was.

But, oh my god. The cheesecake shake. You HAVE to try it if you like cheesecake and ice cream at all. I recommend sharing it with at least two other people though. And get the vanilla ice cream. Trust me.

"Cheesecake Shake ...
A whole slice of cheesecake blended with vanilla, chocolate or strawberry ice cream. (Do not attempt to operate a vehicle under the influence of this milkshake). Katz's Deli and Bar assumes no responsibility for addiction to this product. "A slice of cake in every shake!"."

I had the south of the border burger, others I was with had a french dip and Katz Pride.  First, they sat us in the bar and it was very noisy. There were empty tables in the dining room, why not seat us there?  (It was a mid-afternoon on a Saturday- they weren't busy).  Waiter had a bit of an attitude, trying to be smart-ass & funny at the same time which came across as simply smart-ass.  Bloody Mary's were to die for, food only average.  Good, but not outstanding.  I would consider other choices in Austin.

Wednesday night, I ordered the Rick Barnes. The last 8 minutes it spent on my plate, it just sat there, trying to run out the clock and never took a good shot.

That's good strategy, sandwich.

Okay, I reviewed this restaurant on another site, it was actually my first time reviewing anything, and got slammed in my feedback comments, but my opinion stays the same.  From the selection we have in Austin, I thought it was pretty good.  I had the corned beef on rye and my husband had the french dip and both were really good.  It doesn't stack up if you compare it to Art's Deli or Nate n Al's in LA, but I'm not in LA anymore and I think it was definitely good enough and I loved the atmosphere and the service was great!  So there it is there.  Check it out and I'll think you'll like it too!

It may not be fair for me to review this place because I was rather buzzed before we arrived.  But from what I recall, it was really tasty!  I got a "french dip" sandwich ($10) and a big ole glass of water.  I think that little meal really improved the condition of my health the next morning.  The service was fast and friendly and the restaurant was very clean even though we arrived at a busy time (2am).  It is a little expensive for what you get (I don't think the $10 included fries, but I'm not totally sure), but the convenience is worth a lot.

I think the menu is very overpriced and I would probably enjoy my meal more if I wasn't so aware of how much I was paying to eat it. It's tasty comfort food at 3 in the morning and a pretty relaxed atmosphere.

However, the atmosphere is considerably less relaxing when Marc Katz himself is there. He creeps me out to the max. I think the last time my boyfriend and I were dining by the bar he was throwing back drinks and groping a not-very-convincing transsexual. We had a good time debating wether or not he knew the truth about "her" and wether he would find out before or after he woke up next to her in bed the following morning.

But all that aside, if they would lower their prices the combination of 24 hours and tasty milkshakes would raise my review to 4 stars.

I'll make this quick. Katz is overpriced and I'll never again spend over $10 for a sandwich that doesn't even come with fries or a side. Was it a good sandwich? Yeah, it was okay, but I've had much better for much less.

I have been going to Katz's for  20 years and they are consistant. Marc has  been and Austin original for  over 25 years and will continue to sever up the best pastrami sandwich in Austin texas bar none.  when you are looking for a late nite hide away you can't  go wrong at Katz's. Keep up the good work Marc. Many good years to come I am sure of it.

I don't have much to say that hasn't already been said. So I'll sum up:

Overpriced.

Small Portions.

Crap Service.

If you want a NY-style ruben, go try Manny Hattens instead (even tho they are also kinda overpriced too).

Katz's is open 24 hours, which is about the only positive thing I can say right now.

I went to Katz's this morning for breakfast.  I had the omelet with pastrami and american cheese and mushrooms.  The omelet was huge and it came with a bagel and a latke.  The price was 10.99  but the food was fabulous.  I am from NY and I don't get to Katz's that often but I know it is on the pricey side and I don't mind spending the money.  The food is good I think that the service is good and I have never had an unpleasant experience there.  People have to understand that deli meats usually are more expensive so if there going to order a sandwich it will usually be more expensive.  The atmosphere is nice.  I love the New York subway theme with all the Austin art on the walls.  You are not going to find a better restaurant in Austin.  If you want Mickey D's and spend less money for less quality food then you should go there.

DO NOT GO TO THIS HORRID PLACE: HERE'S WHY

1. the food is  bad at best and overtly overpriced !
2. they treat their employees terribly and as a person with background in the service industry this makes me very upset.

i know an employee that will remain anon, and this anon person is a good waiter/waitress... so , this person accidentally placed a double order of fried pickles to the kitchen... and was made to pay for them without the use of their 50% off employee discount. i mean, it's bad enough she had to pay for them... come on !  such terrible treatment of employees coupled with such terrible food and there you go ....
f*&^k  katz's

Dangit.  All these negative reviews of Katz's.  I grew up in Lost Angeles amid lots and lots of fabulous Jewish delis.  So -- I crave Jewish deli food.  Katz's scratches that itch for me.  So, it may not be Cantor's or Factor's or even Junior's, but its what we got and I like it fine.

I love the matzo ball soup.  I like the borscht. Love the pickles on the table.  I often get the scrambled eggs with lox and onions and get it with a bagel. It comes with a latke that really is pretty darn good.  If I'm with a friend, we split an order of blintzes with blueberries.  oh mama, thats a good and rich rib-sticking breakfast.

For lunch, yankee pot roast is delish, as is a sandwich I like with jalepeno cheese and knockwurst. I haven't tried their chopped liver yet, nor the egg salad, but I will.  The Jewish rye is very good.

Unfortunately, the service is usually pretty bad, I have to admit.  The waitstaff seems disgruntled. They don't seem overworked, just grumpy and not service-oriented.

Oh -- and we are going there for lunch on Saturday for Hanukkah. Mazel tov!

I don't get it. Yes, they are open for late night, but for the cost, you really don't get much at all, so I'm puzzled why this place is always rated so highly in the Chronicle, etc. Also, it is a deli, so for vegetarians, unless you feel like breaking rank and eating a Reuben, you aren't going to see much to eat here.

In spite of the last review, I stopped at Katz's (for the first time) tonight to grab some food to go as I headed to UT to get some work done before tomorrow.   Mr. Katz was there and I shook his hand and talked to him a bit.  I ordered at the bar (a pot roast sandwich) and the bartendress was polite and even ever-so-slightly flirty (either because I had been talking to the boss, or maybe it was my charm and good looks).  If I was a betting man, I'd go for the former over the latter.  Regardless, it was nice.

When I got to my office and dived in to the food, I was pleasantly surprised.  The sandwich was great (pot roast was lean and tasty, grilled rye bread was good) and the fries an unexpected treat.  As others have noted, it wasn't cheap, but all-in-all it was a pleasant experience.  A lesson to servers:  that ever-so-slight level of flirtiness got the bartender a $5 tip on a to-go order.  We grumpy old guys are easy to please.

I don't know what's wrong with you guys. I really like Katz's.

First of all, Katz's saved me on Christmas. My boyfriend and I were driving around hungry, baffled that all the chinese places were closed, when the lightbulb flickered on and we remembered: Katz's never closes!

Upon arriving we found that apparently all other non-Christmas-celebrators in the city had the same idea. There was a 45 minute wait, but we were seated about a half hour later.

I have never had a bad waiter here.. they have all been polite, knowledgeable, and attentive. At worst they have seemed as though in a hurry, though it's never really compromised the level of service.

I also don't really get how Katz's is expensive. The dishes/sandwiches are $8-$11, whereas at most other places of the same cuisine offer the same dishes at $7-$10. Personally, coughing up that extra buck doesn't really kill me. I find it worth it, regardless - the quality of the meat is always superb. I love the roast beef.. love love love it. The sandwiches are always piled high with their respective toppings, and they are decently sized. I've never had a bad meal here, it's always hit the spot. My boyfriend is very partial to the pastrami.

I like the matzo ball soup here as well. I usually get a cup, which is an appropriate size, however the one time I got a bowl was a little overwhelming. It's HUGE!

I think the only bad thing is that sides don't come with the sandwiches and whatnot, but I usually find myself too full anyway.. The desserts rule as well. Try the cheesecake shake (admittedly expensive at $7 - so worth it though) or the brownie boat.

Annoying commercials. And then the guy ran for mayor and put even more annoying commercials on TV. I haven't been there ever since and I still won't go back because I really don't think Marc Katz deserves my money.
And he sued his son a few years back, too. What a maroon.

Sunday night ended the 2007 Austin City Limits music festival and after the Dylan show the four of us were pretty hungry. By the time we got downtown it was midnight and there was a line at Katz's. No matter...NY style deli seemed just right.

We did our duty and stood out front and watched the wasted come and go as we waited to be called. Forty-five minutes later we were seated. Another fifteen minutes later we were waited on. The menu promised standard deli fare and we were more than ready by the time we were served. I went for the Brooklyn Patty Melt with onions and in place of fries I went for a knish. Haven't had one in years and having grown up in NY I was jonesing bad for one.

Another thirty minutes later we were served. The patty melt was great...rye bread, hamburger medium rare with American Cheese and fried onions. The knish was ice cold in the middle. Had to go back. By the time I got the waitress's attention, another fifteen minutes had gone by and everybody was done eating. Frustrating. This could have been so good but service was disgraceful. The waitress was stressed out and knowing how long we were waiting every time she walked by she refused eye contact with us.

Final verdict? The food preparation was variable. The service was atrocious. The ambiance was grimy. Keep your distance.

Katz's is a fabulous deli and restaurant that SCREAMS Austin.  It is real food but the restaurant has a quirkiness about it.

On my last visit I had the Yankee pot roast sandwich with fries and for dessert I had the cheese cake shake.

The meal was FAB.

The service was extremely prompt.  Our waiter was very friendly and very good at his job.  The only faux pas of the evening came when a glass of pinot noir came crashing down within inches of my feet.  The waiter was extremely applogetic.

Allow me to backtrack though.

The owner of Katz's, Marc Katz, is a local celeb.  He does the Katz's commercials, and he has a very distinctive look and a booming voice.  He was waiting at the door when we arrive and personally sat us!!!  It was soooo cool!!!

Anyway, my food was amazing!  The shake was incredible.  Order one and it's enough for two.

The bill was the best part... so much good food for $29 for 2 people.  You have to go to Katz's if you visit Austin and you have to have the cheese cake shake.

Did I just pay $9.00 for a grilled cheese? Oh, hells no!

I've never had anything at Katz's (including the fried pickles) that knocked me off my feet, it's overpriced and the service is always slow.

All in all, I'd say it's a "thumbs down" to Katz's.

I really used to love Katz's. I even almost made a cross-state drive one evening (before I moved to Austin) just for a Yankee Pot Roast sandwhich. I'd dream about the Holy Mary (until I found Opal's sun-dried tomato bloody mary) and rave about the fried pickles (they're whole pickle spears!) to anyone who'd listen.

Either my tastes have sophisticated (I think not - I drink Lone Star willingly) or my budget has tightened (true but not a factor) but the last few times I've visited this checkerboard home of the creepy Marc Katz in drag menu I've had to wonder "why do I keep coming here?"

The prices keep going up. The food keeps getting worse. The servers really seem like they'd rather be anywhere else. And I haven't had a magical moment like the opera singers celebrating a birthday (and singing an oh-my-gawd amazing rendition of Happy Birthday) at three in the morning in years.

Katz's Never Kloses, but Kerbey and Magnolia are open 24/7. I still give one star for the fried pickles - they're whole pickle spears!

Oh, and they have their own parking - there's that.

I actually really like Katz's; sandwiches are my favorite type of food and they make some excellent chicken salad.  Plus, I love getting challah on my sandwich.  The sandwiches are pretty huge, so you have to either be starving or else order a half sandwich and cup of soup.  Likewise, the bowl of soup is more like a vat, so consider yourself warned.  The fries are excellent here, very potatoey and not too greasy; though most sandwiches don't come with them, it's probably best to just split one order anyway since the sandwiches are so large.  I am obsessed with dill pickles, so I have a hard time not eating the whole dish that they give you before your meal.  The lemonade is also good.  I had vegetarian vegetable soup here last time and, though it was almost too salty, it was pretty good.  Sometime I want to come here for the 7 a.m. happy hour.  We've been here at least four times and the service has been decent to excellent.

You already know that Katz's Never Kloses, so I don't need to remind you.  But if you're a night owl like me, you'll come to really appreciate this fact.

Try to avoid it on Friday and Saturday night around the hours that all the bars close down... it's filled to capacity with bumbling, obnoxious drunk people.

Oh, and don't leave without getting the fried pickles.  You know you want to.

In order to properly review Katz's, one must write two completely separate reviews for the two completely different sets of patrons who might dine there. Patron 1 is someone looking to have a traditional kosher deli style meal. Patron 2 has just heard last call at the bar, is likely shitfaced, and is really craving some food. Anyway, here:

1. The decor of Katz's is nicer than most delis. There are pictures of NY all around and the booths and tables are generally clean. The service can be a little hit-or-miss but overall it is ok. The area where Katz's really suffers is the food. The meats are below the quality one would expect from a deli and despite a very extensive menu, if you have eaten at many delis in NY, Boston, or Chicago, you will be disappointed with your meal at Katz's. Overall: 2 stars.

2. Damnit.... it looks like everyone else had the same brilliant idea I did . Its 2:30am and there is a 30 minute wait. Not to mention, they don't like it when I lean on the wall for a little help with balance and support. Assholes. Anyway, after getting shot down by the hostess despite being in a band, we are seated. Before the waiter can even open his mouth, everyone yells "fried pickles!!". The waiter takes our order and will not bring a round of shots as it is past 2am. Jerk. Anyway, the fried pickles show up and somewhere in my mind a little voice is telling me that I need to wait for them to cool before I eat them. Hey, little voice, Kiss my ass!! I'll eat when I want to eat!!. Anyway, I grab one and take a bite seconds after they hit the table. It tastes like... "burning". My mouth is on fire. They must cook these goddamn things in Lava. Anyway, after they cool a little and become edible you can dip them in ranch and let me tell you something: I've never been to heaven, but I'll bet its a lot like a hot fried pickle spear in ranch dressing. Anyway, the rest of the meal comes and its the greatest thing I have ever eaten in my life. I hit on and get rejected by the hostess one last time, hop in a cab, and go home: 5 stars.

Like what most people have aleady said, this place is extremely overpriced. maybe it's new york pricing? maybe it's cuz it's on 6th st and never "kloses"? who knows, but i'd rather not pay $9 for a sandwich.

the food is not bad though, but not really worth the price you pay.

the cheesecake is very good though ($7 i think).
the complimentary chips are ok. but the complimentary pickle spears are good. i think maybe i'll just order a drink and eat a lot of those...

go if you can't find a place late that's open 24 hours and you're on 6th or something.

Oh, Katz's Deli, how I heart thee...

You've been there for me at 2:30 AM, when it was time to turn me out to pasture, and next day was going to require comprehension, you slapped that ginormous Rueben in front of me, and I was SAFE.

Marc Katz is a jovial and compassionate downtown figure and his energy shows in this W 6th staple. Never been here in a non-crisis, and don't know if I ever would come here unless it was a hearty lunch or a late night night-cap.

But when you need it, Katz's is a lifesaver, worth the cost.

The food is not bad at katz's but it is way overpriced; so overpriced in fact that I live around the corner and even I don't go there.   I guess though if you are drunk, hungry and it is so late that nothing else is open then Katz's is an ok option.

Both Mother Egans and Opal Devines serve food late until 2AM on weekends so those are really good options if you need a bite and more importantly, they both serve good beer.  Or Thai Paisson is open until 3AM.
